Good to hear from you - I have always been puzzled by Celia - wondering also how the name Lakey is involved. I'm pretty sure that I heard my uncle refer to her as Cel (pronounced "seal" Lakey) before I found her under the name of Wallace. My notes are scattered here and there but I pulled together this much tonight (much of what you already have). I do have the names of William Harrison's children - in fact, one of his daughters, Lillian Whitaker, died just last month. I also have a copy of the complaint filed against Celia by her children - I found this at the State Library in Ral.

I have some notes about Celia that I made while talking to an elderly Dowdy man who recalled seeing her when he was a child - seems that Devotion must have lost the Davis farm in bankruptcy but Celia had a lifetime right to live there - something like that, haven't seen my notes in a few years. Personally, I've always been under the impression that her reputation was not the best but perhaps Devotion's was also questionable. I am not a descendant of Celia. My connection is through a brother to Devotion (John McLeod Davis).

I do not know if Alice Watkins is a relative to the husband of Celia and, sorry, I do not know when Celia died or where she is buried. I would like to know more about her. *don't know if you'll get all of this Word attachment.

      Celia Davis:
Devotion Davis (born ca 1829), son of Stephen and Jane Muse Davis, fathered two or more children, born to Celia Wallace or Lakey. Supposedly, he married Celia on his deathbed. He died prior to April 17, 1875. I've found the following names as children of Devotion and Celia Davis: Devotion D., William Harrison, Mary Ann.

      Moore County, NC
1850 census:Celia Wallace, age 15 is living with William L., Josiah, Everett, and William J. Wallis - are these her siblings? There is also a Mary and James Davis in the household plus Elizabeth, Mary, and
Missourie Smith. Who are these Davises?

1860 census:Celia Wallace, age 21, and son Devotion D., age 4, are living 2 dwellings from Devotion Davis and his 2 brothers.

1870 census:Celia C. Wallis, age 31, and living with Harrison, Mary A., and H?? Haywood (12 year old black male). Devotion Davis, age 42, is listed in next dwelling.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Devotion Davis died - probably 1875. He is most likely buried in the Davis family cemetery - most graves are unmarked.

1880 census:Ceilie, age 45, living with son, W.H. Davis and wife, Alice, and their infant son, Austin. 1898 marriage certificate for W.H. Davis & Emma Brown lists parents as D.D. Davis (dead) and Celia Wadkins (living).

1900 census:Celia Watkins, age 64, living with 4 or 5 grandchildren, 2 houses from her son, William Davis, his wife Emer, and 7 children. Celia is listed as a widow and head of household. Evidently her husband, Jesse Watkins, is dead. The children have the last name Huffstickler so I assume they are Mary Ann's children.

1933 death certificate for W.H. Davis lists parents as Devotion Davis and Celia Wallace.

A complaint was filed in Superior Court, of NC, Moore County against Jesse Watkins and wife, Celia Watkins, James L. Currie, and M.M. Kelly by J.H. Huffstickler and wife, Mary Ann Huffstickler and Harrison Davis concerning the estate of Devotion Davis.

According to the above-mentioned complaint, a Last Will and Testament was made and published by Devotion Davis, admitted to Probate in Moore County on or about the 17th day of April 1875 and a copy "marked A." was attached to say complaint.

William Harrison Davis, son of Devotion Davis and Celia Wallace/Wallis, was born 12/25/1856 and died 10/8/1933. He married, first, Alice Watkins (born ca 1860). He married Mary Emma or Emaline Mary Brown from Randolph County on 2/6/1898. Alice died 1/18/1893 and is buried in the Davis family cemetery off Dowdy Rd. in Carthage, NC and he and his last wife are buried in the Cross Hill cemetery in Carthage.

William Harrison Davis had a total of 9 children.

Mary Ann Davis (11 Nov. 1863-7 Feb. 1895) married J.M. Huffstickler. She is buried with an infant daughter in the Davis family cemetery (in edge of field) off Dowdy Road, Carthage, NC.
