1826, Dec 16-22 -- Session Journal, House of Delegates, Richmond, VA Page 33, 55
Elizabeth Barrett (of Moore County, NC) petitioned the VA House of Delegates for the pardon of her husband, John Barrett confined in the penitentiary for five years, two and a half years ago for stealing a horse. She petitioned "that she is in extreme poverty, both now and at the time of conviction, with six small children to maintain, and recently the little wearing apparel herself and her children were possessed of, has been consumed by fire, and but for the kindness of her neighbors, both herself and her children must have suffered for the necessaries of life." The penitentiary committee rejected the petition.
1831, Mar 17-30 -- Notice, Fayetteville Weekly Observer [Fayetteville, NC] Newspaper
"Look Out! Broke from the Jail of Moore County, on Friday night, the 25th ult. [Feb], two white men, viz. John Barrett and Jacob Johnson, the former for stealing a horse and Johnson for stealing money -- Barrett is about 45 years of age, has lost part of his nose, and his left hand small and deformed. Johnson is about 21 years old, is quick spoken yet stammers much, and a very bad countenance, wore a quite decent mixt homespun dress when he left. Barrett has served a regular tour in the Virginia Penitentiary. The public are not only cautioned to beware of then, but to apprehend and bring them to justice. A. McDonald, Jailer Carthage, Mar 11, 1831."
