"Dear nephew I drop you a few lines to nite to let you know your father is dead, he died Sunday and was buried today at the old home by the persimmon tree. He has been sick a long time. He was very thin. He was put away fine and nice Jesse. They think he was prepared to go to rest and that's best of all. John and Alis was all his children to see him put away. Tom and Luze is down sick [Note from Lacy Garner: Tom died two days after this letter was written, 05/17/1900] Your papa suffered a site. John has had a time with him. He had gripp, heart and kidney trouble and bowell consumption. There was a site of folks at your old home to day. Well Jes, you write back to me and I'll write more next time. Your papa would bin 73 19th of June. We are all right but not well. There is a site of gripp, dry weather, so write soon and come. Jes, so no more." |
