- 1832, Nov 18 -- Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty, File W4285 Hector and Isabella McNeill
Hector McNeill, 82 year old resident of Moore County, NC filed for a pension. He testified that he was born in the Isle of Skye in the north of Scotland in 1752 or 1753 and entered the service in Cumberland County [now Moore County]. Ansel Melton, a clergyman and William Barratt, Esq. testified that they lived near Hector McNeill and he was over 80 years old and served in the Revolutionary War. James Matthews and James Munk also submitted affidavits of support. Isabella McNeill, Widow aged 85 as of Jul 29, 1845 when she filed for a Widow's pension; she states in her petition her husband died September 8, 1842; that her maiden name was Isabella Murchison; that they were married in Moore County in 1785.

Mr. John McNeill: These lines will let you know that we are well myself Father [John McDonald] & sister Ann [McDonald] are at this time at cousin Phillip McNeills sister Ann [McDonald] stays mostly at cousin R. McIvers the connections are all well. Father has lost the sight of one of his eyes and is getting very infirm Cousin S. McNeill was at cousin Phillips [McNeill] about twelve months ago and we have not heard from him since he was there in Louisiana he has not got our money from Uncle [Simon] Murchison yet and I expect never will. Cousin John if you please I want you to inquire of Angus McAskill if he is in North Carolina, yet what part of Georgia cousin John McDonald is living in also where I should direct a letter to him. I want to write to him to come after Father for we have had to stay with cousin P. McNeill til I am not only ashamed but mortified about it he is the only friend we have had in this country - and he has got a very large family of his own - if you please answer these lines as soon as possible so that I can write to cousin John McDonald whenever I receive your answer. Give my love to Aunt [Isabella] McNeill and tell her that I very much regret ever leaving N Carolina. I have nothing to write that would interest you Father & Sister Ann joins me in sending there love to you. All yours with respect. Catherine M McDonald. State of North Carolina, Moore County: Court of Pleas & Order Sessions November term 1832.
On this 18th day of November personally appeared in open Court before the Justices now sitting Hector McNeil a resident of the County & State aforesaid aged Eighty two years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his Oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.
I Hector McNeil volunteered my Services in the Militia in or about the month of March 1780 or 1781 for a Twelve months Servitude and was placed under the Command of Captain William Lightle [William Lytle?] then Commanding the Troops in the County of Cumberland and State aforesaid from thence we marched to Salisbury North Carolina where we Joined the Troops Commanded by Captain Elijah Moore and there were placed under the Command of Colonel John Armstrong we were marched from Salisbury North Carolina to the State of South Carolina where he Joined the Army Commanded by General Green [sic, Nathanael Greene] whose Army was Stationed on the high hills near Ashley River where we remained from the latter part of April until the first of August 1781 from thence I marched under the Command of Major Griffin McRee to Wilmington North Carolina where we remained until sometime in January 1782 when and where I received a written discharge from Major Griffin McRee and a Certificate from Captain William Lightle from thence I returned home during the Ten months which I Served in the Army to which I was attached & for which I am Entitled to a pension for the same had no in the engagement the Certificate and discharge which I received I have lost or mislaid being Illiterate and I have no Documentary evidence of my Servitude but I believe that I can prove my Servitude by William Barrott [sic, William Barrett Esq. and James Matthews the latter of which I well recollect and in the Army and a messmate with me and Served under the above named Officers both of which Persons are living in Moore County and State of North Carolina the Affidavits of which Persons are herewith transmitted.
Question 1: When and in what year were you born?
Answer: I was born in the Isle of Skye in the North of Scotland and 1753 or 1752.
Question 2: Have you any record of you age and if so, where is it?
Answer: I have no record of my age
Question 3: Where were you living when called into service? Where have you lived since the Revolutionary War and where do you now live?
Answer: When Called into Service I was living in Cumberland County North Carolina I have lived since the revolutionary war and Moore County North Carolina where I now live which was taken from Cumberland County.
Question 4: How were you called into service; were you drafted; did you volunteer, or were you a substitute and if so for whom did you substitute?
Answer: I volunteered my Service for twelve months.
Question 5: State the names of some of the Regular Officers who were with the troops where you served, such Continental and Militia Regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your service.
Answer: The names of the officers & the general Circumstances of my Servitude is embodied in my Declaration
Question 6: Did you ever receive a discharge from the service; and if so by whom was it given; and what has become of it? Did you ever receive a commission; if so by whom was it signed and what has become of it?
Answer: I received a discharge which was Signed by Major McRee which I have lost or mislaid I never received a commission.
Question 7: State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood, and who can testify to your character for veracity and good behavior and your services as a Soldier of the Revolution.
Answer: I am acquainted with Ansel Milton & William Barrett Esq.

State of North Carolina, Moore County
This day personally appeared before me one of the acting Justices in and for said County of Moore, James Munk, and after being duly Sworn Deposeth & Saith that he is well acquainted with Hector McNeill that in March 1780 or 1781 Mr. McNeil was one of the Army which Marched to Salisbury North Carolina in the troops Commanded by Captain Lightle and from thence we marched to Ashley Hill on River in South Carolina where we Joined the Army Commanded by General Greene where Hector McNeil remained for some time until orders was given by Major McRee to march all the Army who had to serve twelve months to the part of Wilmington North Carolina when I understood they were discharged I have been acquainted with Hector McNeil ever since he now lives in the County of Moore and is a man of veracity & truth and I believe he served ten months as he has sworn in his declaration for a pension this the 20th of August 1834.

I Alexander C. Curry Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the aforesaid County of Moore do hereby Certify that under the head (Viz.) Statement of the final Settlement Certificates Issued for the Arrears of pay, Commutation and Gratuity of the officers, non-Commissioned officers and privates of the Late North Carolina Line also of the Balances in Specie, for pay and Subsistence in the year 1782 and 1783 taken from the original Books and Vouchers of Robert Fenner Esq., late agent for Delivering the said Certificates and paying the Specie to the said officers and Soldiers by Abishai Thomas, Agent for settling the accounts of North Carolina with the United States --
Payments in 1782 to the 12 months Drafts -- the name of the applicant Hector McNeil appears on the rolls under the above stated head ?
Given under my hand and seal of office this 4th day of September A.D. 1834.
