1897, Mar 30 -- Article, Carthage Blade [Carthage, NC] Newspaper
"Is he a desperado? Deputy Collector W.C. Troy and Deputy Marshal H.T. Bray and John K. McDonald captured two blockade distilleries and outfits from John L. Davis, about 20 miles west of here last Wednesday. There was a large quantity of beer on hand. Davis was also captured and is now in jail. In writing of this capture, a Carthage correspondent of the News & Observer, pictures Davis as a bloodthirsty desperado, who would no more hesitate at taking a human life than he would at taking a drink of the product of his moonshine still. We think the correspondent's credulity has been somewhat imposed upon, as these is a lack of evidence that Davis owns a private graveyard, but there is little doubt that he has Mormonistic tendencies, for it is a settled fact that he has several harems, and is many times a father. That Davis is a dangerous man when aroused,we doubt not, but we have never heard of his eating snakes or drinking human gore. But there is no occasion for the further uneasiness on the part of the over-timid, for this human hyena is safely locked behind prison bars."

1897, May 27 -- Article, Wilmington Messenger [Wilmington, NC] Newspaper
"Raleigh - His Occupation Gone. A notorious moonshiner behind the bars. In the federal court [May 26] today John L. Davis, of Moore County, the worst moonshiner in this district, was convicted and sentenced to fourteen months in the penitentiary and $500 fine. He has for twenty-seven years led the life of a wild beast, having violated the law all that time. He has six wives and thirty-nine children."

1897, Jun 13 -- Article, News & Observer [Raleigh, NC] Newspaper
"Four United States prisoners were yesterday taken to the penitentiary at Columbus, OH. Among them was John L. Davis, of Moore County, the "King of Moonshiners." He is the man who has been making blockade whiskey twenty-six years, and was never arrested, though he has often shot at and wounded revenue officers - and it is believed killed some. On his trial the fact was brought out that he has four wives living and thirty-seven children. This he denied yesterday and said that he had only three wives and twenty-six children. He gets fourteen months at hard labor."
