"A Wife Trade That Was Allowed to Stand" Asheboro Courier (Jan 29, 1903)
"During the trial of Asa Morgan at Troy last week for the murder of Reger an account came out from the admissions of the mother of the prisoner while she was on the stand that her husband was a Davis whom she married many years ago. After having been married to Davis for a short while there was a trade or swap made by her husband with a man by the name of Morgan. The two men swapped wives without any other formalities further than an exchange. Mrs. Morgan, as she is called, is an old woman and the mother of 12 children, four of whom were born after the exchange of wives by the two men. Since the killing of Reger a son of Mrs. Morgan was killed by John Richardson. It is alleged in self defense; and since the last term of Troy court John Richardson has married a daughter of Mrs. Morgan, a full sister of the young man killed by Richardson."

"Lane Morgan shot and instantly killed John Richardson near Candor, Montgomery County, Saturday. The two men were at the home of Marshal Pitman, whose wife is Richardson's sister. Morgan drew a revolver crying, "You killed my brother and I'll kill you," shot Richardson dead. A few months ago Richardson had killed a half brother of Morgan."

"Dangerous Criminals Who Have Escaped the Courts and the Penitentiary" Rockingham Anglo-Saxon
"In May 1903, Birch Morgan and Asa Morgan, two brothers, shot and killed a man named Reager, in Montgomery County, eight miles east of Troy. Birch Morgan did the shooting. Asa was arrested, was tried and convicted in Montgomery court, fall term, 1903, for aiding and abetting in the murder of Reager. He was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced to thirty years in the State penitentiary. Within six months, he escaped. Birch Morgan has never been caught. Both are at large.
Last may Lane Morgan, Kiser Morgan and Allen Richardson, after making threats, went to Marshall Pittman's home, where John Richardson was employed as a farm hand, and Lane Morgan shot and killed him (John Richardson.)
After some months all three were arrested in South Carolina and were brought to Troy for trial. Last October, Lane Morgan was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced to thirty years in the State prison; Kiser was sentenced to twelve years in the penitentiary. Allen Richardson was acquitted.
One of our Troy correspondents notes the fact that Lane Morgan has escaped from the penitentiary authorities."
